Remnant II Was Designed to be Played With Upscalers

The lack of any upscaling tech may cause performance issues.

Even though Gunfire Games' Remnant II, an action-adventure soulslike and a sequel to the 2019 Remnant: From the Ashes, hasn't even been released yet, the game has already managed to ink its name in history by becoming one of the first game titles designed specifically to be played with upscalers.

Addressing the game's technical issues encountered by early access players, Gunfire Games took to Reddit to share a list of some of Remnant II's most common problems and explain how to fix them. Speaking of the title's general performance, the team revealed that Remnant II was designed "with upscaling in mind", meaning that one would require to use DLSS, FSR, or XeSS for the game to run smoothly.

"So, if you leave the Upscaling settings as they are (you can hit 'reset defaults' to get them back to normal), you should have the smoothest gameplay," reads the team's Reddit post.

The players, however, seem to be worried about the game's approach to optimization. According to responses shared on Reddit, it appears that even with high-end hardware, framerates are consistently falling below 60 FPS, with players expressing their dissatisfaction with the precedent being set and even stating that using upscalers as optimization tools might become "a serious problem" further down the line.

To demonstrate how the game runs with and without upscaling tech, YouTuber FrondtechBenchmarks tested out Remnant II on a PC with Ryzen 5 5600x and RTX 3060 Ti. As demonstrated in the video, the game barely reached 25 FPS on Ultra without DLSS, while with DLSS enabled, it managed to get to 45+ FPS.
