Nokia's Classic Snake Game From the 90s Recreated in Houdini

Umar Muzammil showcased an unusual use case for SideFX's procedural 3D software.

In case you missed it, 3D Artist at Quixel Umar Muzammil shared an exciting new project a couple of weeks ago, demonstrating an unusual use case for SideFX's flagship procedural 3D software, Houdini.

By implementing movement and path algorithms, the author has managed to set up an impressive Houdini Digital Asset (HDA) that simulates Nokia's iconic Snake game from the 90s directly in Houdini. What's more, the HDA in question is highly customizable, allowing one to tweak such parameters as speed, size, trail length, movement precision, and more.

In the future, the creator plans to expand on this project by adding self-collision features, so we highly encourage you to follow Umar on ArtStation so as not to miss any upcoming updates.

It's interesting to point out that a few months ago, Senior Technical Artist Alon Rubin also showcased an unconventional way to recreate the legendary game – as a material in Unreal Engine 5:

Another old-school classic was also recently remade by Ludvig Lovén, an Unreal Engine developer and CEO at Arvikasoft, who set up the GameBoy version of Tetris as a GPU simulation in UE5's Niagara, showing that it is possible to create games in the engine without code or Blueprints.
