Hundreds of Light Sources Added to a 3D Scene With UE5 & NVIDIA's Tech

Ted Mebratu has stress-tested Lumen in UE5 using NVIDIA's RTXDI.

Ted Mebratu, a well-known Lighting Artist and Level Lighting Artist at Naughty Dog, has recently showcased a new mind-blowing project that demonstrates how one can leverage NVIDIA's and Epic Games' tech to push 3D lighting for environments to a whole new level.
Leveraging Unreal Engine 5's Lumen and NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI), a framework that facilitates the implementations of efficient direct light sampling in real-time renderers, effectively enabling one to add and render millions of overlapping dynamic lights to 3D scenes without performance constraints, the artist re-lit a cyberpunk-style 3D environment by adding myriads of run-time lighting sources.

According to the author, the project's goal was to stress-test Lumen and see how if fares when combined with RTXDI. "I obviously took it to the extreme in this scene and added [hundreds of lights] to see how far I can take it before I hit a limit. Which turned out to be really far," commented the creator.

If the environment itself seems familiar to you, it's because it is. Besides RTXDI and UE5, Ted also utilized Rainy Neon Streets, a highly detailed cyberpunk-style environment created by the renowned Environment Artist Maarten Hof using Blender, Substance 3D software, and Unreal Engine 5. Earlier, Ted Mebratu joined 80 Level on three separate occasions to tell us more about lighting in Cryengine, explain how to set up lights for a cinematic scene, and show the process of relighting Chuang Ma's scene Forgotten Alley in UE4. You can check out all of these projects and more by visiting the artist's LinkedIn page.

And here are some great tutorials that explain how to utilize RTXDI with Unreal Engine 5:
